Tips for selecting the perfect brewery (brewing system / brewhouse)

Based on the daily production, beer equipment can be divided into three categories: large-scale beer equipment, commercial beer equipment, and home brewing beer equipment. Large-scale beer equipment is suitable for breweries and has strict requirements for venue and workshop design. Commercial beer equipment is suitable for beer houses, bars, restaurants, and similar establishments. Home brewing equipment is designed for individuals. The main components of large-scale equipment include the gelatinization tun, mash tun, lauter tun, kettle tank, and whirlpool tank. Commercial beer equipment usually consists of 2 to 3 vessels, such as traditional 2 vessel brewhouse, mobile 2 vessel brewhouse, combined 3 vessel brewhouse, split 3 vessel brewhouse, large-scale 4 vessel / 5 vessel brewhouse, etc. Home brewing equipment typically comes in the form of an all-in-one machine, which is compact, easy to operate, and cost-effective.

Traditional 2 Vessel Brewhouse & Movable 2 Vessel Brewhouse

This type of beer equipment is widely used in the beer industry and consists primarily of a mash tun/lauter tun and a kettle/whirlpool tank.

Its main advantages are:

The brewhouse is simple and requires low investment.

The pipeline is simple and easy to operate.

The height of the brewhouse is low, and it does not have high requirements for the height of the site.

Combined 3 Vessel Brewhouse

This type of brewery typically consists of a mash/kettle tun and a lauter/whirlpool tank. The lauter/whirlpool tank is actually composed of an upper and lower two-layer structure, with the upper layer being the lauter tank and the lower layer being the whirlpool tank. This type of brewhouse is popular in the US market.

Its main advantages are:

The mash/kettle tank has a large heating area, resulting in fast heating speed.

The lauter tun is located at a high position, allowing for natural filtration (wort is filtered by gravity) at a fast rate, resulting in clear and bright wort.

The vertical cylindrical design of the whirlpool tank provides better separation for hop lees and hot coagulum.

The mash/kettle tank can prepare spent grains water while filtering the wort, reducing mash time by 30-50 minutes. It enables up to 5 brewing batches per day.

Customized 3 Vessel Brewhouse

There are various combinations for this type of brewery, with common combinations including:

Mash tun + lauter tun + kettle/whirlpool tank

Mash/lauter tun + kettle tank + whirlpool tank

Mash/lauter tun + kettle/whirlpool tank + hot water tank

Its main advantages are:

Flexible combinations to meet different customer needs.

The height of the brewery is not high, and it does not have strict requirements for the height of the site.

Fast heating speed, reducing mash time.

Large 4 Vessels / 5 Vessels Brewhouse

This type of brewhouse has a volume of 2000L or more. The combination of a 4 vessel brewhouse includes a mash tun, lauter tun, kettle tank, and whirlpool tank. The combination of a 5 vessel brewhouse includes a gelatinization tank, mash tun, lauter tun, kettle tank, and whirlpool tank. Large-scale brewhouses are usually equipped with auxiliary equipment such as a screw conveyor, wort buffer tank, hop filter tank, etc.

Its main advantages are:

Daily brewing batches can reach up to 5 batches.

The mash tun and kettle tun have a new type of heating jacket, which shortens the mash heating time. The boiling strength can reach up to 8-10%, promoting protein denaturation and aggregation, and reducing the content of undesirable taste substances.

Using a screw conveyor to easily transport malt.

An added wort buffer tank allows for natural filtration of wort.
