Both batch distillation and continuous distillation are types of distillation processes. The key difference between batch distillation and continuous distillation is that batch distillation is carried out in batches, whereas continuous distillation is carried out continuously.
What is batch distillation?
Batch distillation is a method of separating components in a batch mixture. In this method, the distillation separation is repeated. Batch distillation is easy to perform. The process provides very high purity separation of chemicals and maximum process flexibility (several different chemicals can be processed in one batch process).
Batch distillation can be carried out in a single distillation column where several components can be separated into individual receiving tanks. When a batch of distillation is complete, the column can be used quickly and efficiently with disparate mixtures of components. Moreover, this process can be fully automated.
However, batch distillation is susceptible to contamination. In fact, when a column is used in a separate batch after distillation is over, traces of the previous batch may remain in the system, and therefore, the next batch may be contaminated (if the next batch is the same as the previous batch, this is not a problem).

What is continuous distillation?
Continuous distillation is a method of separating components in a mixture using a continuous process. The process is not interrupted until the end of the distillation. This method has high separation efficiency. The amount of mixture used for separation is not limited by batch distillation.
Compared to batch distillation, continuous distillation is an expensive process. This technique requires more distillation columns than batch distillation; the number of columns required for continuous distillation is denoted as N-1, where N is the number of components separated from the distillation.
